2014 Season Sneak Peek & New Shop Announcement!

Hi all!

Wow, it has been a busy knitting season.  It's that time again for me to unveil some of the pieces I've working on to fill my Etsy shop as well as sell at local craft fairs.  Here's a quick sneak peek of a few of the items you'll see on my Starfish Knits shop in the next week or so, along with a fun candid shot of our lovely models and me trailing with inventory in the background during our recent shoot.  A big thanks to photographer, Sam Samuels!  You can check out her blog here.

And, finally, a very exclusive sneak peek at a couple items that will soon be available from my new shop, Elise Knit Designs.  This shop will celebrate simplicity and classic styling while maintaining a focus on high quality, natural fibers.  The shop is still under construction, but you'll be able to shop at  it soon at eliseknitdesigns.etsy.com

In the meanwhile, you can follow my progress on Twitter: @eliseknitdesign

Here's my super sneak peeks:

Thanks for stopping by!  Have a great rest of your week!

The Knit Dress: Fall 2014's Knit Trend?

So I was recently looking at some of the knit trends for the upcoming season (gotta stay informed, of course! Haha), and noticed a couple things that were pretty interesting:

1) Big, textured knits are IN.  Yeah, baby!  Love that look :)
2) Textured knit dresses are making a comeback.

That's right, you read that correctly:  Knit dresses.

I feel like knit dresses never fully went away, but usually they were reserved for some kind of tight, machine knit look that basically hugged your body so close that there wasn't a whole lot of give for that morning PSL from Starbucks or the occasional (maybe regular) holiday cookie.

But then I found all these cool looser knit looks on the runway.  Perhaps they only look loose because they are being worn by crazy tiny models, but perhaps this might be a new trend.  After all, a knit dress CAN be knit in such a way that it flatters with an a-line cut or built in belt.  I love the idea of an a-line knit dress paired with a belt...  Hmmm... inspiration is flowing.  Now if only I had the patience for such a project.

Anyway, here are some cool photos I came across for this particular Fall 2014 knit look:

Happy knitting! :)

Fall is Coming!

It's almost fall!  My favorite time of year for knitting! :)  I can't wait.

I've already been working on several projects for some upcoming craft events at my work.  It's all mainly just stuff to keep my hands busy.  I love working on hats and scarves around this time of year.  Nothing too fancy.

What are your favorite things to knit for fall? Happy knitting!

Getting My Head Straight

It's been weird lately.  And what I mean to say is that I have felt weird lately.

I can't totally put my finger on it, but there have been many little "life" things going on lately that have felt like they add up to a few big "life" things, and I think I'm not sure how to juggle it all.

Just keep going, I guess.  And knit... I guess.  Today at lunch I felt like I just needed some alone time to myself and really wanted to knit and think, so I went to a nearby coffee shop and sat down with my needles and yarn and just kept going.

To anyone reading this, what do you do when you feel a little off?

Hope everyone's having a great summer!

Stitch-N-Pitch

I finally made it to Stitch-N-Pitch night at the SF Giants' home stadium, AT&T Park.  I've been wanting to go for years and never made it until just last week.  I went with an old high school friend of mine and some of my knitting buddies from work.

We each got a Giants themed knitting bag.  Not super big, but nice enough for a decent sized project.  I do wish it had had some way of closing, like a tie or zipper or something.  Funny thing though, this photo is of my friend Lara's bag because the other three we got had the decal upside down!  We didn't even notice until the game was nearly over.  Oh well, you can barely tell.

Plus it was really more about the experience, rather than the bag :)

Lara's normal Stitch-N-Pitch bag
Everyone had something they were working on, a doll blanket, a scarf.  I had a black and white dishcloth.  I wanted to do something Giants colored, but didn't happen to have any good ideas for my crappy orange yarn.  So I went with the black.  That's the nice thing about the Giants.  You can just wear (or knit) black and it's still team spirited.

Anyway, it was so fun to be surrounded by other knitters and kind of surreal to be sitting at the game knitting, instead of knitting on my couch while watching the game.  If you happen to hear of a stitch and pitch near your area and you enjoy baseball at all, I highly recommend it.  It's pretty cool.

Summer Spruce-Up

Hi loyal readers!  Sorry it's been a while!  I recently hurt my wrist, so I wasn't able to knit for a while, and didn't have a lot to contribute to this blog.

You may have noticed the new look of the blog... Figured it was time to try something new.  Freshen things up a bit.  Let me know what you think!

Since I don't have any recent knitting photos of my own to share with you, I thought I'd share a few fun facts and knitting inspired events with you!

Knitting at it's chic-est!
First, did you know that Audrey Hepburn (my all-time favorite movie heroine) was a knitter?  Yep!  She even knit sweaters for herself and former husband, Mel Ferrer.  I found this photo in a book I received for Christmas some time back.  It was a collection of candid photos of the lovely actress, and I nearly jumped with delight when I saw this photo in particular.  I never knew she used to knit!  How inspiring!

Second, if you haven't already noticed, it's baseball season, my favorite sports season of the year!  I'm going to a local Stitch-N-Pitch night, and I've heard that they do these kinds of special nights at baseball stadiums all over the country!  They are sponsored by the National Needle Arts Association.  You can learn more by clicking here.

Find your favorite baseball team's website and check into their Special Events and you'll probably be able to find it.  I've never been before but I imagine it's going to be a really cool way to connect with a greater knitting community.  Can't wait!

The Simple Hat

Here's a new, easy pattern for anyone looking to knit their very first hat!

The Simple Hat

by Starfish Knits

Materials Needed:
16" size US11 circular needles
4 size US11 double pointed needles
Stitch/Row Marker
Tapestry Needle

Yarn Needed:
Any Bulky 5 weight yarn (picture shown uses Lion Brand Homespun yarn in Edwardian)
Approximately 50 yds (or less than one skein) needed

To begin:
CO 50 (for adult sizing)

Place marker and begin working in K1, P1 in the round until the piece measures approximately 2 inches from the base.

Begin knitting every stitch in the round until the piece measures approximately 6.5"

Decreasing rows:
Row 1: (K5, K2tog) until last stitch, K1
Row 2: Knit
Row 3: (K4, K2tog) until last stitch, K1
Row 4: Knit
Row 5: (K3, K2tog) until last stitch, K1
Row 6: Knit

At this point you may want to move your needles onto your DPNs (double pointed needles)

Row 7: (K2, K2tog) until last stitch, K1
Row 8: Knit
Row 9: (K1, K2tog) until last stitch, K1
Row 10: K2tog until last stitch, K1

To finish:
Cut a long tail and use the tapestry needle to thread the tail through the remaining stitches, slowly pulling the stitches off the needles as they are strung.

Once all stitches are off the needles and linked to the tail, pull the tail to cinch the remaining stitches together.

Begin to weave in the tail and secure it to the hat.  Cut off any excess tail.

Weave in the tail from the start of your hat (at the base)

And, voilà!  Your very own simple hat.

And for more of a challenge, check out my pattern for this ribbed beanie!

Non-Monetary Ways to Give Back

Sometimes, when people think of donations, the first and only thing that comes to mind is money.  How much money do I need to give to make a difference?

I've often been a victim of this myself.  Luckily, I've come across several awesome people and organizations that have caused me to think differently and more creatively.  With a lot of my "donation budget" wrapped up in recurring donations to specific organizations, I'm often trying to figure out how I can give back more, without necessarily blowing up my bank account.  While it's honorable to want to give back as much as you can, no one wants to see someone go bankrupt doing it.

Here are three things that I've been reminded of in the last couple years that are just as valuable as monetary donations: time, resources, and talent.  I realize that money falls into the resources category, but for this post's sake, I'm referring more to tangible items/goods/physical ability.  Let's take a look at some examples for all three:

Time
It's so easy to find organizations that need volunteers.  In the last year, I've had a blast volunteering with friends and co-workers at several charitable organizations including (not limited to) the National AIDS Memorial, San Francisco AIDS Walk, and the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito.  Whether you enjoy gardening, administrative work, or cleaning up after animals and sorting their fish (I bet you can guess where that happened!), there is something for everyone when it comes to volunteering.  Check out volunteermatch.org for some cool ideas on how to get started in your area!

Resources
*I'm going to start this with a disclaimer that both of these ideas may require money and use a particular talent, but I don't list them under money since the item needed isn't directly bought for a charity, and the talents used aren't necessarily specific, but rather humanly universal.

Smart phones.  Where would our world be without them?  Probably much less connected, but maybe also more personal (that's right, I said it - I think we all spend too much time on our phones instead of with each other!).  That said, both of my "resource" volunteer options involve smart phones.

This first option, however, doesn't even involve the use of your smart phone, but rather, the non-use of it.  Currently, Unicef has sponsors for it's Tap Project, which provides a day a clean drinking water to those in need of it for every 10 minutes that someone doesn't use their smart phone.  All you need to do is go to tap.unicefusa.org on your smart phone and start the timer.  If you move your phone at all, it will stop recording your time.  My record so far is 50 minutes, or 5 days of clean water.

The second option is using your regular exercise routine to benefit a charitable organization of your choice.  I've mentioned Charity Miles on my blog before, but need to mention it again because it's just that great of a chartiable giving phone app.  Just download the app and run it while you walk, run or bike and Charity Miles' sponsors will donate to an organization of your choice (25 cents for every mile walked/ran, and 10 cents for every mile biked).  I'm addicted to this app and use it during all my outdoor hikes and runs.

Talent
Last is talent.  This involves using your creative, mental and administrative skills and abilities to come up with unique ways to give back.  Using your talents can also fall under the time category, but I've decided to use the time category to refer solely to existing volunteer opportunities.  For this, I'm thinking original ideas!  Do you like to paint, draw, create?  Try creating something to sell in a charitable auction or try selling your own work and donating the profits to a non-profit.

Maybe you could provide a non-profit with creative goods that they need.  For example, my knit circle at work is currently in the middle of a knit-a-thon month where we try to make as many hats as possible over the month of March to then donate to chemotherapy patients in local hospitals.

A friend of mine is a very talented artist and he recently used his abilities to create a year long drawing-a-day project that he's turning into a book, with publishing costs funded through Kickstarter, and all proceeds of the finished book benefiting the San Francisco Children's Creativity Museum.

How could you use your talents to give back?
How I'm staying motivated to make more hats for hospitals!
Now that you've heard some ideas, get out there and start making the world a better place.  In the words of Kid President, "It's everybody's duty to give the world a reason to dance."

Happy Monday everyone!

Be My (Knit) Valentine

I realize this is a few days late, but I thought it'd be fun to have a Valentine's Day themed post here.  There are so many cool ideas for Valentine's Day knit projects that I just wanted to share some of my favorites!

Valentine Mug Cozy Knit Pattern XO (source: ravelry, $5.00)
This mug warmer pattern is so cute!  I wish I had found something like this to knit for a friend prior to the holiday.  Oh well, next year... Or maybe I'll just have to make one for myself! ;)

"Be My Valentine" Flirty Fingerless Gloves (source: ravelry, $5.00)
These are just too cute.  I've noticed more and more people wearing these fingerless gloves lately, and this is a very fun Valentine's twist on the idea.

Love My iPad Case (source: red heart, free)
And last, for you crochet folks out there, this is a very cute iPad case pattern.  I'm still not skilled enough with crochet, but hopefully some of you readers are and can take advantage of this free pattern!

Happy Belated Valentine's Day to all my readers!  Thanks for reading!

New Year Catch Up

It has been quite some time since I posted here.  The holidays were very busy and I also caught a couple colds both during and just after the break, so I've been resting (and knitting) a lot.

I spent most of my time finishing up orders and gifts for family and friends, but I found some time to enjoy other hobbies during the holidays and just after the new year as well... Here's a little peek into what I've been up to since Thanksgiving...

Made my first pair of potholders for my grandparents

Drank a lot of hot cocoa, especially ones with giant marshmallows and brown sugar :)

Made more lussekatt buns for St. Lucia's Day...

...while knitting of course :)

Tried making a gluten free mac and cheese for my roommate

Celebrated 2014!

Ran my second race...with a very slow pace...

...and this was waiting for me at the end :)

Happy 2014! Here's to another fun year!
